WooCommerce? Back-Up!

Welcome to WooCommerce 3.0!

WooCommerce for WordPress just dished out a Major update. It’s been well awaited but there has been a LOT and we mean a LOT of changes in this update. We won’t bore you here with the technical details – if you want to read the release notes click here

Do you have a WooCommerce store?

If you do, DON’T UPDATE. Well not yet anyway. Before you click that little ‘update’ button make sure you back up your website.

What are the costs of not backing up?

To keep it simple, your website is made of lots of little components, including a theme & plugins all working on your WordPress CMS platform. Whether it’s a WooCommerce update or a Theme Update we always suggest users back-up their website and test the updates to see if anything breaks.

Risks 5/10 nothing probably will, but 5/10 something does. Put simply, it’s not worth taking the risk. Your website files all talk to a database where the raw information in stored; like your users, posts, pages and products. Updates can affect your database too and if something goes wrong with your database it’s harder to fix and more costly – you could be paying a web developer’s time which is around €35-€60 an hour.

How do I back-up?

A lot of people ask what is the best way to back up their site and test updates.

Here is my breakdown of Level = Method.

Basic Technical =

Use StageCoach for WordPress, not free (unless you make use of the 2 day free trial every time you update) but cheaper than a pro and no technical knowledge required.

Stagecoach will not only back up your website, it will move it to their secure staging area where you can test your website and then push the test site live once you are sure everything is working.

Technical =

Try Duplicator – Free version works great and you only need access to your cPanel/hosting panel to create a new database. Full instructions come with the plugin.

I like this plug-in because it is helpful to move themes such as u-design where the settings are not stored in the database (in my experience some themes can break when you try to move them in conventioanl way in your hosting)
